The second-level university Master’s degree in Safety Management of Transport Systems and Networks is promoted by the Department of Mechanical, Energy, Management and Transport Engineering (DIME) of the University of Genoa, in collaboration with the Department of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering (DICCA).

The Master’s programme trains Safety Managers and experts in infrastructure safety and transport network management systems. Participants acquire legal, economic, financial, managerial and technical-engineering skills that can be applied directly in professional settings, with contributions from company specialists and experts from the public and private sectors during the internship or the development of the final project work.

Professional profile

The Master’s programme trains specialists in safety management processes, from the analysis of infrastructure degradation to the planning and management of interventions. Graduates will be able to:

🟡 apply the guidelines for the safety of road and railway infrastructure, using the regulatory, economic, financial and technical knowledge required for safety management;

🟡 analyse and model the condition of transport infrastructure, assess its degradation and determine priorities and deadlines for interventions, using state-of-the-art digital modelling tools;

🟡 assess the impact of the unavailability of transport network elements on accessibility, average network congestion and local congestion in connected or nearby areas;

🟡 use information on the condition of structures and transport networks to define an integrated maintenance plan that considers schedules, intervention costs and measures to mitigate the effects of construction and maintenance work on mobility.

Admission requirements

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree, or an equivalent qualification, in one of the following degree classes:

  • Architecture and Building Engineering-Architecture – LM-4;
  • Civil Engineering – LM-23;
  • Safety Engineering – LM-26;
  • Electrical Engineering – LM-28;
  • Management Engineering – LM-31;
  • Mechanical Engineering – LM-33;
  • Environmental and Land Engineering – LM-35;
  • Building Systems Engineering – LM-24.

Applicants holding a different second-level university qualification may also be admitted if they have knowledge and documented professional experience relevant to the profile of the Master’s programme. Admission is assessed by the Management Committee on the basis of the applicant’s educational and professional curriculum.

Graduating students may also apply, provided that they obtain the required qualification by 6 October 2026, the deadline for completing enrolment.

Up to 60 participants may be admitted. A minimum of 12 participants is required for the Master’s programme to be activated.

Selection procedure

Admission is based on an assessment of qualifications carried out by a Selection Committee appointed by the Management Committee.

  • Motivational statement, with reference to the applicant’s professional goals: up to 20 points. The statement must not exceed one page and must be uploaded in PDF format with the online application.
  • Educational background and qualifications: up to 20 points, including up to 10 points for the final degree grade, up to 4 points for a PhD and up to 6 points for other educational experience.
  • Professional experience: up to 20 points. The curriculum vitae must be uploaded in PDF format with the online application.

Selection is based exclusively on the submitted qualifications and documents; no oral interview is scheduled. Applicants must obtain at least 31 points to be included in the final ranking. In the event of a tie, preference will be given to the younger applicant.

Qualification awarded

Second-level university Master’s degree in Safety Management of Transport Systems and Networks, corresponding to 60 CFU.

Fees and financial support

The total tuition fee is 3,932 euros, including the university contribution and stamp duties. The fee is payable in two instalments, according to the deadlines and procedures specified in the official call for applications.

Reduced fees are available to eligible public-sector employees under the “PA 110 e lode” initiative and to employees or members of the programme’s partner organisations. Further information is available on the financial support and reduced fees page.

Presentation of 13 May 2022

On Friday 13 May 2022, the Master’s programme was presented during an event followed by a round table involving key organisations in the transport network and infrastructure sector, including ANSFISA, IIS, CIFI, ANAS, RFI, ASSTRA, AISCAT, Rete Mille Infrastrutture, ANTEL and IIT. The event also included a contribution from the then Minister of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility, Enrico Giovannini.
